Last week, I covered Claude Fable 5 and showed you how the model handles writing, research, and planning for your business. The situation changed fast.

Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 on June 9, 2026, as its most powerful publicly available model, then pulled it offline globally just three days later. On June 12, 2026, the US government issued an export control directive ordering Anthropic to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The directive covered any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including Anthropic's own foreign-national employees.

Since there is no way to verify nationality on every request, Anthropic turned the models off for everyone. Reports describe this as the first time a leading AI company has taken a publicly deployed model offline because of a US federal directive.
