Everyone Has ChatGPT. Few People Get Paid.
ChatGPT hit 1.2 billion weekly users in September 2026, based on OpenAI figures reported by Superlines. In February 2025, the count stood at 400 million, according to Search Engine Land.
Over a billion people now own the same tool. So the line "I know ChatGPT" will not win you a single client.
Clients pay for results. You get paid when you use ChatGPT to deliver one clear result for one type of customer.
Your first goal is $1,000 a month. You reach this number with a few hours of work each week, not overnight.

Why $1,000 a Month Is the Right Goal
Most side hustles pay less than people expect. Bankrate found the typical side hustler earns about $200 a month. The average comes in higher, at $885 a month (Bankrate via Acorns).
Other surveys show bigger numbers:
LendingTree's 2026 survey found side hustlers average a record $1,242 a month. Only 33% of Americans now have a side hustle, down from 38% in 2025 (LendingTree via FOX 5 Atlanta).
QuickBooks found side hustlers average $2,038 a month while working about 19.5 hours a month (Intuit QuickBooks).
A few high earners pull each average up. So plan around the typical number, then grow from there.
A $1,000 month puts you well ahead of the typical side hustler. You reach the goal with 3 to 5 clients or a small set of digital products.

The Market: Buyers Want AI Skills, and the Money Is Splitting
Demand Is Growing Fast
Upwork reports earnings from skills mentioning AI grew 109% in one year (Upwork In-Demand Skills 2026). Other in-demand skills grew 23% (CNBC). AI skills grew almost 5 times faster.
The fastest-growing AI skills on Upwork:
AI video creation and editing: +329%
AI integration (connecting AI to other software): +178%
AI data labeling (tagging data so AI learns): +154%
AI image creation: +95%
AI chatbot building: +71%
Freelancers doing AI work earn 34% more per hour than freelancers who skip AI work (Upwork Future Workforce Index 2026).
Fiverr shows the same pattern. Searches for "AI automation" rose 136%, and searches for "prompt engineering" rose 76% (Fiverr Business Trends Index). Searches for freelancers who "humanize AI content" jumped 641% (Fiverr Investor Relations).

AI skills are growing nearly 5x faster than other skills

The Twist: Plain AI Output Is Getting Cheaper
Upwork data tells two different stories (Upwork Future Workforce Index 2026):
Generic AI creative work: contracts grew 90%, and pay per contract fell 13%.
Experts using AI inside their own field: contracts grew 72%, and earnings rose 22%.
Complex work done with AI: earnings rose 45%.
Upwork also saw fewer searches for the word "ChatGPT" in September 2026. Searches for specific results, such as automation, integration, and AI video, kept growing (Upwork Monthly Hiring Insights).
The lesson for you: buyers pay for a finished job, not the tool.
Don't sell "ChatGPT writing."
Sell "a done-for-you welcome email series for dental clinics."
Sell "a monthly content system for real estate agents."

The value split: expertise + AI pays; AI alone gets cheaper

Your Best Customers: Small Businesses Without a Setup
Goldman Sachs surveyed owners in its 10,000 Small Businesses program. In 2026, 86% use AI, up from 56% in 2024. Only 18% of AI users have AI fully built into how the business runs (Goldman Sachs via The Tribune).
More numbers from small business owners:
73% spend $100 or less a month on AI tools, so most rely on free or cheap plans with no setup help (Axios).
70% say they need more AI training (Thryv).
64% use AI to write marketing content, a top use (Axios).
Hypothetical example: a bakery owner opens ChatGPT, types a question, and gets an okay answer. She has no saved prompts and no system. Her weekly posts still take her three hours.
You fill the space between "we use ChatGPT" and "ChatGPT saves us time and money." You sell setup, systems, and done-for-you results.

Five ChatGPT Side Hustles to Reach $1,000 a Month
Each offer below sells a result. ChatGPT does the first draft. You bring the judgment, the niche, and the finish.
Side hustle | Who buys | Sample offer | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
AI-assisted content and newsletter writing | Coaches, local businesses, B2B founders | 4 newsletters or 8 LinkedIn posts a month | $250 to $600/month retainer |
"Humanize and edit" AI content | Businesses with stiff AI drafts | Rewrite 10 emails or web pages in brand voice | $150 to $400/project |
ChatGPT setup and custom GPTs | Small businesses, solo professionals | Custom GPT, prompt library, and 1-hour training | $300 to $1,200/project |
AI workflow automation | Busy small business owners | Automate lead follow-up or content repurposing | $200 to $1,200/project, support $300 to $1,200/month |
Digital products | Your audience, niche buyers | Niche prompt pack or Notion template | $9 to $49 each |
Price checks: Upwork lists AI content writers at about $15 to $40 an hour, and top writers charge more (Upwork). Small AI integration gigs run $200 to $1,200, and support retainers run $300 to $1,200 a month (Taskip, citing Fiverr's 2026 guide).
1. AI-Assisted Content and Newsletter Writing
Pick this path if you write well or know marketing. ChatGPT handles outlines, first drafts, and repurposing. You add strategy, the client's voice, and fact-checks. One newsletter turns into 5 to 10 social posts. Writers on Upwork earn a median of $30 to $59 an hour (Upwork Writer Rates).
2. "Humanize and Edit" AI Content
Fiverr searches for this service rose 641%. Upwork reports jobs to improve AI-generated work grew 70% in a year. Many businesses hold stiff, robotic AI drafts, and you rewrite the drafts so they sound human. Call yourself an editor, not a generator. This offer costs nothing to start and pays fast.
3. ChatGPT Setup and Custom GPTs
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and includes custom GPTs and Projects (OpenAI pricing). A custom GPT is a version of ChatGPT set up with a client's own instructions and files. Build a "brand voice GPT" or a "customer FAQ GPT." Then teach the client's team how to use the GPT in a one-hour session.
4. AI Workflow Automation
This path pays the most. You connect ChatGPT to tools like Zapier, Make, or n8n so tasks run on their own. Hypothetical example: a new lead fills out a form, and a personal follow-up email goes out in five minutes.
Fiverr searches for "AI automation" rose 136%. Upwork lists "AI workflow automation" as the second-fastest-growing AI search. Automation builders charge about $40 to $150 an hour (Taskip). Start with one simple workflow.
5. Digital Products
Prompt packs, templates, and mini-courses sell for $9 to $49. You earn less per sale, and one product sells again and again. Build products after you learn what clients ask for most. Omnisend found that 16% of U.S. ecommerce side hustlers sell digital products.
Experts who use AI inside their own field earn 22% to 45% more, based on the Upwork data above. Use your work history to charge more. Hypothetical examples:
A relationship coach builds a "communication script GPT."
A cooking teacher sells meal-plan templates.
A real estate agent builds a listing-copy system for other agents.
The $1,000 Math
Four paths add up to $1,000 a month:
Path A, retainers: 4 clients at $250 a month = $1,000
Path B, projects: 2 setups at $500 = $1,000
Path C, digital products: 50 sales at $20 = $1,000
Path D, hybrid: 2 retainers at $250 + 1 project at $300 + 10 product sales at $20 = $1,000
Time check: at $50 an hour, $1,000 takes about 20 hours a month. Spread over four weeks, you work about 5 hours a week. Omnisend found 5 to 9 hours a week is the most common side hustle schedule. Omnisend also found 33% of U.S. side hustlers already earn $1,000 or more a month.
Your costs stay low:
ChatGPT Plus: $20 a month, enough for all five offers above
ChatGPT Go: $8 a month in the U.S.
ChatGPT Pro: starts at $100 a month, more than most beginners need
Platform fees: Fiverr and Upwork take a cut of each sale, so build those fees into your prices

Four ways the $1,000/month math works

Your 30-Day Launch Plan
Follow one week at a time. Each week has three tasks.
Week 1: Pick and Package
Choose one niche and one offer. Start with a skill or industry you already know.
Write a one-sentence offer: "I help [who] get [result] in [timeframe] using AI-assisted [service]."
Set a fixed price and a clear list of what the client gets.
Week 2: Build Proof
Create 2 or 3 sample pieces. Use spec work, or help a friend's business for free.
Build a simple portfolio page, or set up a Fiverr or Upwork gig.
Ask ChatGPT to review your offer from your ideal client's point of view.
Week 3: Get in Front of Buyers
Send 10 personal outreach messages a day on LinkedIn, by email, or to local businesses.
Post on LinkedIn 3 times and show before-and-after examples.
Offer a low-risk starter package, such as "your first 4 posts for $99."
Week 4: Deliver and Grow
Give your first 1 to 3 clients more than you promised.
Ask each client for a testimonial and a referral.
Turn one-time projects into monthly retainers.
Three Starter Prompts
Copy these into ChatGPT and fill in the brackets.
Offer builder: "Act as a [target client]. Here is my service offer: [offer]. What would stop you from buying, and how should I rewrite the offer?"
Outreach writer: "Write a 90-word cold email to a [business type] owner offering [service]. Lead with one specific problem they likely have."
Quality check: "Review this draft for accuracy, generic AI phrasing, and brand voice. List fixes before rewriting."
Six Mistakes Keeping People Under $1,000
Selling the tool. "ChatGPT expert" means nothing to a buyer. Sell the result.
Competing on price. Generic AI work now pays 13% less per contract than a year ago. Low prices push you into the shrinking part of the market.
Sending raw AI output. Bluevine found that 78% of small business owners don't fully trust AI to work without a person checking. Your review is part of what you sell.
Skipping a niche. "I write content for anyone" attracts no one.
Charging by the hour. AI makes you faster, and hourly pricing pays you less for speed. Use fixed-price packages.
Hiding your AI use. Follow each platform's rules. Tell clients you use AI when the detail matters to them.
What Comes After $1,000
Your first $1,000 month proves your offer works. From there, you have three next steps:
Raise your prices.
Add more monthly retainers.
Move into higher-value automation and consulting.
Independent AI consultants in the U.S. charge $75 to $400 an hour (FactoryJet). Upwork reports 89% of freelancers have more work opportunities than a year ago.
The Tools I Use
ChatGPT gets you started. For my own client work, I use a short stack:
Claude: my AI tool of choice for writing, editing, and building client systems. Every offer in this article works with Claude too.
Perplexity: fast research with sources.
Canva: graphics, templates, and digital products.
beehiiv: the newsletter platform behind Venture AIX Money. [BEEHIIV AFFILIATE LINK]
Three Key Takeaways
Sell a result for one type of customer, not "ChatGPT skills."
Small businesses use AI and still need setup help, so your best buyers already exist.
Four clients at $250 a month get you to $1,000.
Your Next Step
Do one thing today. Write your one-sentence offer and send the offer to 5 people.
Then reply to this email with your offer sentence. I will feature the best ones in the next issue.
Share Venture AIX Money with a friend who keeps talking about starting a side hustle.
