You have spent 15 to 20+ years building real expertise. You know your industry. You have a track record. You have contacts, credibility, and a reputation that took lots of time and sacrifice to earn.
And yet, LinkedIn is not working for you the way it should.
You post occasionally. You accept connection requests. You check your notifications. But your profile sits mostly quietly while people with a fraction of your experience seem to attract attention, clients, and opportunities you should be getting.
This is not a credentials problem. This is a platform problem. And I’m here to help!
LinkedIn changed. Most professionals over 40 did not change with it. The platform now rewards creators, not resume holders. It favors people who publish, engage, and use specific tools built directly into the platform. Most of those tools go completely unnoticed by experienced professionals who have no reason to know they exist.
This session covers five of those tools. Each one is free to use. Each one gives you a direct advantage on a platform where your experience is already your biggest asset. You will walk away knowing exactly which features to activate, what to do first, and how to use a short list of AI tools to speed up the process.
The free checklist at the end of this article breaks every strategy into specific action steps you complete in 15 minutes or less. Download it, work through one section per day, and your LinkedIn presence will look completely different by the end of the week.
I’m Hugh Lee Johnson, creator and publisher of Venture AIX Money, a newsletter and podcast built specifically for professionals over 40 who want to use AI tools to build income and take control of their careers.
Everything I share comes from what I am actively testing, building, and doing, not from theory. And the “Mission” if you choose to accept it, is for me to take your life and money-making to the next level faster than you can do it by yourself.
So if you’re ready, let’s get it started! ⏱️
5 LinkedIn Features Most Professionals Over 40 Ignore and Why That Is a Mistake
LinkedIn has over one billion members. Most of them log in, scroll the feed for a few minutes, and log back out. They treat the platform like a digital resume and nothing more.
If you are over 40 with decades of experience, a real professional network, and hard-won expertise, you are sitting on a platform with enormous income potential and using less than 20 percent of what LinkedIn offers.
The five features below go unused by most professionals over 40. Each one gives you a direct path to more visibility, more credibility, and a growing audience of people who will pay for what you know.
LinkedIn Newsletter
LinkedIn has a built-in newsletter tool. You write, publish, and distribute directly on the platform. Every follower receives a notification the moment you publish a new edition.
LinkedIn newsletters consistently generate open rates between 40 and 60 percent. Compare this to the average cold email open rate of 20 percent. Your audience is already on LinkedIn. You are meeting readers where they spend time daily.
How to start:
Click "Write article" on your LinkedIn home page
Select "Create a newsletter."
Name your newsletter after your niche topic
Publish one edition per week with one clear, useful idea
One actionable newsletter per week builds an audience faster than any amount of passive scrolling.
The Featured Section
Your LinkedIn profile includes a section called "Featured." Visit 100 profiles today, and roughly 80 of them will have this section either empty or filled with posts from two years ago.
The Featured section sits near the top of your profile. Visitors see the Featured section within seconds of landing on your page. You choose exactly what goes there.
Add your strongest LinkedIn post. Add a link to your newsletter sign-up page. Add a free checklist or short guide that your ideal reader would want. Visitors who land on your profile see your best work immediately instead of a blank wall.
This takes 10 minutes to set up. Leave the Featured section empty, and you lose every visitor who never clicks further down your profile.
Creator Mode
Creator Mode changes your LinkedIn profile from a static resume into a content platform. When you turn on Creator Mode, the Follow button moves to the front of your profile. Your follower count becomes your primary growth metric. LinkedIn displays your content topics at the top of your profile page.
Creator Mode also tells the LinkedIn algorithm to distribute your posts beyond your immediate network. Your content reaches people who do not follow you yet.
How to turn on Creator Mode:
Go to your LinkedIn profile
Scroll to the "Resources" section
Click "Creator mode."
Toggle the switch on
Add five topic keywords describing what you write about
This takes three minutes. The reach difference between Creator Mode on and Creator Mode off is significant enough to justify doing this today.
LinkedIn Audio Events
LinkedIn Audio Events work like a live podcast. You schedule a session, invite your network, and speak directly to your audience in real time. No studio required. A quiet room and your phone are enough.
LinkedIn sends your followers a notification before the event begins. You get free visibility for your brand before you say a single word.
Professionals over 40 skip Audio Events because speaking live feels uncomfortable. Your competitors feel the same discomfort. They also skip this feature for the same reason. Show up once per month with 20 minutes of genuine value, and you stand out immediately in a crowd of people who never show up at all.
End every Audio Event by inviting listeners to subscribe to your newsletter. Turn a live audience into owned subscribers.
Targeted Direct Messaging
LinkedIn search filters let you find your ideal reader, future client, or referral partner with precision. Filter by industry, job title, company size, and location. Then send a short, direct, personal message.
Direct LinkedIn messages generate up to 300 percent more responses than cold emails. The platform creates a context of credibility. When you send a message on LinkedIn, the recipient sees your profile, your experience, and your content before they even read your first line.
Keep your message to three sentences. Lead with something useful or specific to the recipient. End with one clear next step.

Your experience as a professional over 40 is your competitive edge on LinkedIn. The platform rewards consistency and expertise. Both of those are things you already have.
Pick one feature from this list and activate it today. Turn on Creator Mode. Start your LinkedIn Newsletter. Schedule your first Audio Event. Take the first step before another week passes.

THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS
LinkedIn has a built-in audience and built-in notification tools. The LinkedIn Newsletter feature delivers your content directly to followers with open rates two to three times higher than cold email. Professionals who publish there consistently build authority and an audience at the same time, at zero cost.
Your profile is a sales page, and most professionals leave it incomplete. The Featured section and Creator Mode are two settings you activate once and benefit from every day. Both send the right signals to the LinkedIn algorithm and to every visitor who lands on your profile.
Direct outreach on LinkedIn outperforms passive posting when done correctly. Three sentences. One clear next step. Targeted search filters. Professionals over 40 have the credibility and experience to make personal outreach feel genuine rather than salesy. That is a built-in advantage most younger creators do not have yet.
